Heart of the Beast case study:
A Movie Night with Brad Pitt

The challenge:

Finding the Perfect Match.

Paramount Pictures enlisted Evolution to produce an in-theater promotional commercial featuring Brad Pitt watching Heart of the Beast alongside a German Shepherd resembling his canine co-star from the film.

The concept was simple: Brad and the dog enjoying a movie together, sharing popcorn and reacting to the action on screen. Making that interaction feel natural required specialized animal casting, careful preparation, and precise coordination.

Finding the right dog proved challenging. With no suitable candidates available locally, Evolution expanded its search across the Western states and ultimately cast a one-and-a-half-year-old German Shepherd. Although a registered service dog, he had no prior experience working on camera.

Adding to the challenge, Evolution would have just 45 minutes with Brad Pitt to capture multiple versions of the creative.

Our solution:

Preparation Makes the Performance.

Evolution managed the project from casting through production, coordinating animal auditions, location scouting, props, lighting, and the shoot itself.

Working with the director of photography and skilled lighting team, we transformed Paramount’s screening room into a convincing theatrical environment, creating simulated projector light and screen reflections that played naturally across Brad’s face.

A dedicated pre-training day on the actual theater set proved invaluable. Working with the dog’s three handlers, we acclimated him to the environment and rehearsed his actions, including jumping into theater seats, watching the screen, asking for popcorn, barking, and offering his paw.

Stand-ins allowed the crew to rehearse the action, refine camera positions, and establish lighting before Brad arrived, maximizing the limited time available with him.

With American Humane on set overseeing animal welfare, everything was in place for the shoot.

Brad and the dog connected immediately. Brad’s ability to react naturally to the dog’s behavior helped create the illusion that the two were genuinely engrossed in the movie together.

Thanks to extensive preparation, the team captured the required performances and creative variations within the limited shooting window.

The result:

A Moviegoing Moment with a Personal Touch.

Evolution delivered 4K footage to Paramount’s editorial team to create 16:9 theatrical and 9:16 social media versions.

The finished promotional spot brings together Brad Pitt and a canine lookalike in a playful moviegoing moment, appearing in theaters globally and across social media. The campaign became one of Paramount’s most popular promotional efforts, generating significant audience engagement and helping drive moviegoers to theaters.

The project demonstrates Evolution’s expertise in specialized animal casting, meticulous pre-production, and efficient on-set execution, particularly when working with high-profile talent and demanding production schedules. Its success also demonstrates how a simple, relatable creative idea, executed well, can connect with audiences and deliver meaningful marketing results.
